California's Prop 19 and SEIU

If you look at the SEIU web page there is a section called "How a Union Can Help". The first item states: "# 1 - Working together, union members have the strength to win better wages, affordable health care, a secure retirement, and safer workplaces." The SEIU supports the passing of California's  proposition that legalizes the use marijuana in California.

Where does legalized pot fit  into this "help" statement?  I'm sure that it will not fit under the section of better wages (well maybe for the Mexican drug cartels).  I'm sure your health insurance rates will be higher if you are a pot smoker so no help with the affordability of health care. I don't see it helping you to a secure retirement, I actually am of the view that it might even prevent retirement. Last but not least, they state that Unions support a safer workplace. That is the point were I would like to further investigate.

The SEIU's membership is in three sectors: They are: Healthcare (doctors, LPN's homecare workers,etc), property services (maintenance workers, janitors, security officers), and public services (local and state government workers,public school employees, bus drivers and child care providers).

Let's say you have a bit of a cough and head off the the doctors office. The first person you run into is an LPN that wants to give you an injection, did she just roll a doobie on break? How about going to work and you are doing your best to make things Plumb and Square and you step up to the table saw do you wonder if your helper has just had a blunt? Late at night you believe your building is being protected by a quality union security company how do you know that they are not sitting in their car having a little "party"? Do you send your child off to a day care or school with a loaded teacher? The implications are endless.

The support of this proposal by this union makes no since at all to me. A union is designed to help its employees stay safe. This act will only hurt employees and customers. The answer is only money. If you are an SEIU employee you have just been sold out for the all mighty dollar.

Will it grow their union? I suppose it will, because it will now take two employees to do the job of one before.  I just think if you are a Californian and want to help add money to your tax coffers there are better ways (how about getting rid of sanctuary cities or stop spending money?).

Here's a Doobie Son

I just read this story on KJCT8.com about a group that wants support from mothers for the legalization of marijuana. This to me is insanity. The story states that using marijuana is safer than using alcohol, prescription drugs, and other substances. To me, there is one word retort for that argument ...baloney.

Do I think that alcohol, prescription drugs and other substances (I'm assuming they are referring to the illegal ones) are more dangerous than the legal ones? Maybe. Does that mean I should make marijuana illegal? No, as my grandparents used to say "Two wrongs don't make a right." Very true in this case. Just because something is safer does not mean is should be legal.

A comment in the story was "It is absolutely time to stop destroying families. To Stop putting people in federal penitentiaries. It is time to heal families, not destroy families," says Attorney Jessica Corry. Evidently it is better to destroy families by having a stoned family member slip behind the wheel of 4,000 pounds of steel and drive around amongst other families. Or how about the families that are destroyed by the drug cartels in Mexico and Arizona? I bet they would like to see a little justice.

If we used the logic that our prisons are full because of the all the marijuana crimes, so to relieve the prison population we should make it leagal. It would also relieve the prison population to release all the rapists, murderers and child molesters, I wouldn't advocate that proposal. Where does it stop?

This is kin to those parents you hear about that say; "it is OK for kids to drink with their friends as long as they do it home with me." It is not right in that case and it isn't right in this case. Would you go to the gun store buy a revolver, load it, then place it in a kids toy box? Total insanity. Why would any parent want to support a group that would have you believe that the legalization of marijuana, for their children, is a safe alternative. The safe alternative is keeping marijuana illegal and the users safely behind bars.

Why don't we celebrate 2/14?

With the all of the 4/20 events yesterday I was wondering why there is no quasi "holiday" for 2/14. Sure there is Valentines day, the quasi holiday celebrating love,  but the celebration I am talking about is; On February 14, 1929 (Sir) Alexander Fleming discovered that a mold by-product can kill bacteria, called penicillin.

Penicillin has done much more for the healing of the public than marijuana has ever done.  I noticed that in a KJCT news story that customers were flocking to the medical marijuana dispensaries to get "ready" for the "celebration".  Why don't we all rush out on February 14th and get a bottle of penicillin to "celebrate" the discovery of penicillin?

I read in the Denver Post that there are 2,000 people ages 18-21 that have medical marijuana cards.  There are about 20,000 people in the state that have medical marijuana cards. So are we to believe that 10% of the population that has some sort of medical issue that "requires" medical marijuana are in the ages of 18,19,20,21? What the hell is happening to these young adults? Are there other health issues we need to be concerned about?

I'm not sure of all the reasons you would have marijuana prescribed, but I think chronic pain and glaucoma are two principle reasons.  Are cell phones and video games causing glaucoma? I know if you sit to close to the TV you will go blind, that is what my mom told me years ago. So maybe we are just sitting to close to the TV.  Is there some sort of terrible disease that is inflicting pain on our young people? With all the marijuana cards being issued to our youth we must be having an epidemic of something.

Maybe I'll just go take a couple of penicillin and "think" about it for a while...
