We're Number Two!!

If I read the numbers correctly Denver Broncos will have the number two overall selection in the NFL Draft. That and seeing Tim Tebow's promise are the only reasons this whole year wasn't a waste.

I can see the Broncos selecting Patrick Peterson from LSU. He is a super fast Cornerback. Maybe Da'Quan Bowers from Clemson, a very talented Defensive End. Either way I get to spend the day today and draft day in April the same way ...Chanting... we're number two, we're number two.

Run like Floyd...

I am of the age that I just barley got to start watching Floyd Little and he retired. I was trying to figure out how football was played and I remember someone (I think it was my Dad) saying "on a running play you give it to Floyd and get a first down". I thought Floyd was the name of the position. So when other teams would hand the ball off, I thought they were handing off to their "Floyd". Then over the years I have watched replays of his plays and I have seen what I have missed. Floyd Little was a great runner. A great Denver Bronco.

It is about time that they put Floyd Little in the Hall of Fame. It is a fitting place with all the other great "Floyds" out there!

Nolan Out as Defensive Coordinator

I have to admit that the Broncos are making me a bit nervous now. Mike Nolan has been booted as the Broncos Defensive Coordinator. At the beginning of the season I thought that it was going to be a 9-7 year and the Broncos wouldn't make the playoffs. They ended up 8-8 and didn't make the playoffs. I consider that fair considering that they had a new coach and only 1/5 of the team was the same.

By the sixth game of the year I could not believe what was happening. It wasn't the high powered offense of the past. It was the defense. Now that the Broncos sacked the leader of the defense, I get a bit concerned.

I know Josh McDaniel's needs to make the team "his", but I hope he doesn't end up making it the team of Wade Phillips. I guess we just have to wait and see. I'll give the kid (Josh) this next year to develop his plan for the Broncos before I start being to overly critical. Then all bets are off.

I often say that my two favorite teams are the Denver Broncos and anybody that beats the Raiders. This week Denver beat the Raiders so I like them twice as much.

Jay Cutler - August is jersey burn month

“In Denver, we didn’t have this many fans at all,” he said. “We weren’t even able to accommodate that many fans (at practice). That’s Chicago Bears fans for you. They’re proud of their Bears.

“It’s a lot (different). Denver’s like a 6 and Chicago’s like a 9. It’s a quite bit different. Just the fans and how passionate they are, that’s probably the biggest difference.”

“Denver, am I looking forward to it? No. Just the whole hoopla that’s going to come along with it,” he said. “I’m excited to go back and see some of the guys there. I’ve got some really good friends back there, and get back to Denver and see if my house is still standing. Other than that, that’s about all I’m excited about Denver.”

Shock and Awe

I am not talking about the ground attack of the United States Air Force on an Iraqi target, I am talking about the firing of Mike Shanahan.

Being a BIG Denver Broncos fan it was real shocking that Pat Bowlen fired Mike Shanahan. I reviewed the one true (non-monetary) stat that NFL owners look at when dealing with coaches, that is the win-loss record. That stat tells me a lot of how Bowlen made his decision:

You see post Elway that Shanahan had 9 out of the last 10 years that he did not make it past the first round of the playoffs and 6 years out of the last 10 he did not make it to the playoffs at all. If you say that making the playoffs is a successful season, then over the last 10 years Shanahan only succeeded 40% of the time that is not a great grade. Don't get me wrong I like Shanahan, and I believe he is an offensive genus. There lies the problem, to be successful you need to be able to coach both sides of the football and Defense and Special Teams are not his games (Note: the 40% success rate - that would be the offensive side of the ball). If you say that winning games is more important than the playoff thing lets look at his record over the last 10 years. He had 91 wins - 69 losses or a winning percentage of 57%. If you use the high school grading method that would still be an F. I know that there were those two Super Bowl wins, but maybe we just need to realize that Shanahan's time has come and some new blood or a new system will help. I know that if I was managing my maintenance team and we were only successful 57% of the time I don't think I would be on my post for very long. So my whole view is: I'm shocked that they fired Shanahan, and in awe, after going over the win - loss record, that they kept him so long.
