The Massachusetts legislature has decided that they would do an "end around" the Constitution and say that whoever gets the most votes nationally, is who would get their Electoral College votes during a Presidential election.
If I was a citizen of Massachusetts I would be livid. Your legislature has just decided that you were not smart enough to decide on a President and you want that decision to be made by the citizens of California.
The electoral college gives lower population states a more representative voice in the election. During the last election, Colorado was a "battleground" state. Both candidates visited the state multiple times, including little Grand Junction. If there were no Electoral College, the candidates would only have to campaign in high population states or cities. So the States of California, Texas and New York would be making the decision for the entire country. I don't know about you but I look at the government of California and have to wonder what they are thinking when the people select the candidates they have selected.
In a true democracy every person has a vote. The United States is not a true democracy, we are a republic, a representative government where the people choose who represents them, such as the Electoral College. The Constitution of the United States has a series of checks and balances. The Electoral College is one of those checks. One of the other checks in the Constitution is having only two Senators per state, no matter the population. So if you are operating on the theory of one person-one vote than you have to assume you want to get rid of the Senate as well.
The electoral college is in place so all different parts of the United States have a voice. Why anyone would would give up their vote? The folks of Massachusetts have just surrendered their vote, because a few are angry over a bad (for them) election result back in 2000. While the Electoral College is not perfect it is better than only using the popular vote.
Well yeah, had it not been for the Electoral College we could have had Al Gore. Wouldn't that have been sweet? If you think this Country is out-of-whack now, consider what would have been the case! That, alone, gave me a much clearer understanding of why our Founding Fathers had the foresight to institute this measure of balance.
