I noticed in the news that five kids were sent home from Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, CA because they were wearing American flags on bandanna's and t-shirts. School officials said that because it was a Mexican holiday (Cinco de Mayo), it was inappropriate for them to be wearing the American flag.
Let's start with Cinco de Mayo. It is not even a holiday in Mexico so how can it be a holiday here? Next off we live in the United States so everyday it is appropriate to wear the American flag. My heritage is mostly German. I would never expect for Americans to not wear the American flag during Oktoberfest. My heritage may be German but I am American.
I've got an idea why don't we start celebrating February 2. That is an important day for those of us that live in the southwest. That is the date of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. That treaty ended the Mexican War in 1848. Mexico sold to the United States most of the west, for the cost of $18,250,000 ($457,373,077 today) plus $3.25-million ($81,450,000 today) in debts that the Mexican government owed to U.S. citizens.
On February 2 students will be required to fly the American flag on t-shirts and no Che' Guevara t-shirts or Mexican flags would be allowed. Extra credit could be given if your shirt incorporates General Winfield Scott, General Zachary Taylor, Robert E. Lee, George Meade, Ulysses S. Grant or Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. All these men defended the United States against Mexican invasion....
Maybe Mexicans could just try to assimilate into the American culture, bringing with them the finer things from their culture and strive to become part of the great melting pot we call America. Let's not change the United States into Mexico, let's just become a better United States.
If one decides to live in America, permanently, then that person should become an American or. at least, not bother the the ones who are; otherwise repatriate!
